Sysmex Advanced Parameters
Reticulocyte Hemoglobin Equivalent
The Reticulocyte Hemoglobin Equivalent (RET-He) is a parameter
available on Sysmex XN-Series™ and some XN-L Series™ analyzers
that measures the hemoglobin content of newly formed RBCs, called
reticulocytes. Measuring the hemoglobin content of reticulocytes,
along with other RBC indices, may provide a better understanding of
the pathophysiological mechanism of anemia in a patient.
When a patient is anemic, there may not be enough hemoglobin to
effectively transport oxygen through the body. When this happens,
signals are sent to the bone marrow to increase production and
release RBCs into the peripheral blood. If the patient does not
have adequate iron stores, the newly-formed RBCs will have less
hemoglobin than is appropriate because RBCs rely on iron to
synthesize hemoglobin.
The RET-He represents the amount of hemoglobin in the
reticulocytes. Knowing the hemoglobin status of these immature cells
helps clinicians assess the functional availability of iron in the bone
marrow, which may offer additional clinical information for managing these challenging patients.

Sysmex Canada is helping future
lab professionals get started
At Sysmex, we believe that supporting education is one of the most meaningful contributions we can make
to the future of healthcare. Sysmex Canada sponsors the Sysmex Award in Medical Laboratory Science at the
British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in partnership with the BCIT Foundation. We also support the
Sysmex Award for Excellence in Medical Laboratory Sciences at Red River College in Manitoba.
BCIT is one of Canada’s most respected applied learning institutions, offering a range of programs from
diplomas to master’s degrees. Its Medical Laboratory Science program is recognized as one of the best in
the country, equipping students with the knowledge and hands-on training they need to enter careers in
diagnostics and patient care.
Sysmex is also proud to support the next generation of healthcare professionals through a scholarship for a
student in Red River College Polytech’s Medical Laboratory Sciences program. This scholarship is awarded
to a student who has completed Term 3 of their didactic year, helping to cover expenses during their clinical
year. The award is given to a student who demonstrates strong academic achievement, professionalism, and a
balance of teamwork and independent work skills.
These awards are designed to give students the confidence to transition from the classroom to the laboratory,
ready to make an immediate impact. As emphasized by the BCIT Foundation, scholarships enable students to
“hit the ground running and become the leaders of tomorrow.”
Through these awards, Sysmex is proud to strengthen both education and healthcare. By helping students
succeed, we are investing in healthier communities, reliable diagnostics, and the future of patient care
across Canada.
